Hardcopy of Doom Scrolling
For our sculpture class we were asked to think about ritual and routine. Two habits I unintentionally do everyday is check my phone and doodle. Checking my phone’s social media, especially lately induces my stress levels and I often find myself getting sucked in an endless loop of bad news. This is also known as doom scrolling. Opposite to that, when I am doodling it is more of a meditative practice, I will put in headphones and listen to music or a podcast. It is a time for myself to relax and temporarily turn my brain off from the outside world. So for this project I decided that I was going to translate the hours I was spending on my phone into a positive activity starting Oct. 29th to November 8th. For however long I was on my phone’s social media, I had to sit down and doodle these flowers, which I normally unintentionally doodle on anything I get my hands on. I created a literal scroll of all the pages of flowers that added up to over 13 hours of doodling. Much like doom scrolling, it has a sense of endlessness and repetition of the same shit you see over and over again on today’s social media and news.
