The SARA Act
For this piece took inspiration from my grandmother’s traditional czech floral embroidery she has all over her house. I wanted to explore how the motif of these patterns would change over time due to factors like urbanization, invasive species, and extinction. While doing research I came across the Canadian Species at Risk Act, which provides an annual list of extinct, endangered, and at risk species in Canada. Comparing the list from 2003 to the most recent in 2019, the list almost doubles in endangered plant species. The mesh fabric allows viewers to see through the inverse floral motif thats illustrated on the other scarf, to produce a pattern of the urban landscape that is causing these species to become endangered.
